Experiment & Record - Yr 10 GCSE

The work of artist Willem Devoye
The work of graffitti artist Roa
The year 10 GCSE students this week had a mock exam so that they become familiar with more sustained and focussed ways of working in exam conditions, in preparation for their final the following year. The focus of the exam was to explore assessment objectives in more depth: AO1: To explore artists and respond AO2: To experiment with media AO3: To record through drawing, painting or other means. As a starter the students were set a research task to read and find out about the artists above. Following this they created their own tattooed hand using biro on chamois leather reflecting the work of Devoye or they painted on pebbles developing their use of acrylic painting techniques. The students all used mark-making to create texture and detail and tone to add 3-dimensional aspects to their work. They all enjoyed the work and they were surprised by how tired they were at the end of the 5 hours. Next year they will obviously complete a 10 hour exam so this has been a good exercise for them in realizing what is expected as well as emphasizing the importance of producing skillful inventive work which will be a big focus in the new curriculum of the future.
